Real Nappies Don’t Cost the Earth!
Modern reusable nappies have come a long way since the days of boiling nappies on the stove, plastic pants and folding terries. Aside from the financial and environmental benefits of using cloth nappies, there are many other advantages. Modern reusable nappies are easy to use, simple to care for and make a great fashion statement. There is a wide variety of styles, patterns and sizes to choose from. There are no harsh chemicals and cloth nappies are mostly made from natural fabrics. Crinkly plastic pants have now been replaced with breathable PUL (Polyurethane Laminate) wraps which are available in funky designs and prints. There are many different types of fastening like hook and loop or poppers to suit your requirements. Cloth nappies are a healthy option. According to an independent study published in the British Journal of General Practice, infrequent changes could cause nappy rash with any nappy type.
The initial cost of buying cloth nappies can seem quite expensive but when you compare it to the overall cost of using disposables, you can make a huge saving. Make further savings by buying gently used second hand nappies. Britain throws away nearly three billion nappies every year. Cut your waste in half by using cloth nappies. It’s no longer necessary to boil and soak cloth nappies. Simply store soiled nappies in a bucket with a tight fitting lid and wash them at 60c with your usual detergent in your washing machine.
Cloth nappies are a realistic alternative for modern parents!

Great post, Slayerkat and washable nappies are easy to get into your routine after a few weeks. Where is the place to go to get advise on the best type for your baby do you think – so that new parents can avoid a costly mistake?
Thanks Rachelle. I run a real nappy network in south east London. I would recommend to new parents to find out who there nearest nappy network is. Networks are usually run by cloth nappy parents who can give valuable advice about what nappies to choose.
CONGRATULATIONS!! Well deserved, Slayerkat. Amazing also to hear that there are “nappy networks”… One to tuck away for the day I become a parent
SlayerKat – a link to the results of the competition was just included in the blog carnival “Frugal Living Tips”: http://tinyurl.com/fltedition1 Hopefully now even more folks will now get the chance to read your brilliant winning entry!

Congratulations, i don’t have any young children, but this is a helpful idea!
