The traditional Derbyshire Well-Dressing season continues throughout August. Very often the pictures created to dress the wells are made out of growing things and beans and seeds. Even if you don’t have a local well to dress, making one of these pictures could be something to do with kids come the holidays. Have a look at this beautiful example we found on the internet.
Then there’s Lammas Day on August 1st. Lammas Day is the original harvest festival when the first bread was made with the new corn. In the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, Lammas Day is called the "Feast of First Fruits". It’s also a date observed by Pagans, as the midpoint between the Summer Solstice and the Autumnal Equinox.
Better-known August dates include the Edinburgh Fringe Festival (6-30th) and the Notting Hill Carnival
(28th and 29th). And Monday 30th August is our Late Summer Bank Holiday date.
