Since its launch, the British Food Fortnight (19th September – 4th October) has quickly become the definitive national celebration of our regional foods and drinks, and the health benefits and pleasures of eating quality, fresh, seasonal and regionally distinct produce.
Here at VegBox, where we try to make every fortnight’s food as British and as local as possible, we’re more than ready to join in the festivities, and we’re wondering whether you’d like to join us.
Amongst the acres of brilliant information on the Love British Food website, there is a list of "14 things you can do". And that’s our kind of list!
Here are our favourites:
1. Buy British food and only buy fruit and veggies that are in season.
2. Shop specifically in local greengrocers, farm shops and markets.
3. When eating out, find somewhere that prides itself on using British and even better, LOCAL, produce.
4. Find out what foods are particular to your region and try them if you haven’t already.
5. Encourage your staff canteen / kids’ school to offer a British food menu.
6. Cook a British meal for friends. (Perhaps using one of our own seasonal recipes!)
7. Go picking your own or start growing your own – even if it’s just an experiment with one ingredient in a container on a windowsill.
8. Finally, to find British Food Fortnight events to go along to, check out the What’s Happening section of the Love British Food website.
Here at VegBox, we’re going to combine 1, 2 and 7 and then do a number 6 with our neighbours.
We’ll bring you an update the week before BFF starts, and we’ll be sure to post on how it all goes.
But what we’re really interested in right now is whether you might pick any of these activities yourselves.
Use the comments box to let us know your plans / make a little "VegBox Pledge" and we can cheer each other on as the time gets closer.
