Here at VegBox Recipes, we are avid followers of lots of great campaigns, including Mind’s "EcoMinds", the BBC’s "Dig In" and the "Capital Growth" initiative in London.
This month, there is a flurry of activity that we wanted to make sure you knew about. For so many of us, the desire is there to Grow Our Own, and yet it can feel so daunting. If up until now, you’ve been putting it off, maybe these links will be the ticket…
Ecominds is a grant programme which helps people with experience of mental distress get involved in local environmental projects that improve mental and physical health. The projects they fund promote "ecotherapy" work and experiences in outdoor environments based on the growing evidence that green exercise provides great benefits for health and well-being.
The BBC’s Dig In campaign provides expert advice and information encouraging novice gardeners to discover the simple pleasure of growing and cooking their own vegetables.
Well this month, EcoMinds are promoting Dig In in particular because Dig In are giving away free packs of seeds from their On Tour bus.
So if you want to pick up some seeds, here’s a link to the list of places and dates you can catch up with them.
Meanwhile, over at Capital Growth, they have just launched their amazing "urban food growing training programme" to help those of us in built up areas make the most of the spaces we have in which to grow food. This month you can go along to their training centre in Regent’s Park and learn all about successful seed sowing and how to plan an organic vegetable garden for between only £10 and £20.
And at King’s Cross Central Skip Gardens there are FREE workshops on urban food growing courtesy of Food Junctions. Check out their events here, if you’re interested in experiencing first-hand how to grow vegetables in unusual places!
And don’t forget that the VegBox Recipes team publishes a simple Growing Our Own checklist every month to guide you through the year. Here’s a link to the most recent.
Do let us know if you go to any of these events – we’d love to hear about your experiences, and for you to share the best tips you pick up.
